This appendix helps you determine whether Service Pack 3 fixes a particular problem or solves a need. You find a list of the issues that Microsoft fixed in Service Pack 3, as well as a list of new components or enhancements in it.
If you determine that you need to install Service Pack 3, you can use the instructions in this appendix to download and install it. You also find a number of useful precautions you must take to prevent problems resulting from the installation of this or any Service Pack.
Tables D.1, D.2, and D.3 describe the issues that Microsoft has addressed in each service pack. The first column in each table contains the Knowledge Base article number. You can look up the article on Microsoft's Technical Support Knowledge Base (http://www.microsoft.com/kb/default.asp) to learn more about the given issue. The second column is the title of the Knowledge Base article, which describes the issue.

Aside from fixing a multitude of issues, Service Pack 3 also adds a number of components to Windows NT Server 4.0:
Microsoft no longer makes Service Packs 1 and 2 available; you can download Service Pack 3 from the Microsoft Web or FTP sites, though. You find the files described in Table D.4 on Microsoft's FTP site at ftp://bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/nt40/ussp4. You can find the same files on Microsoft's Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/NTServerSupport/Content/ServicePacks.

Before you install Service Pack 3, you must take a few precautions:
When you're ready to install Service Pack 3, download it, as described in the previous section, and then launch it. The archive extracts its contents into a temporary folder, installs the service pack, and removes the temporary files. The setup program asks whether or not you want to create an Uninstall folder. Always do this so that you can recover from any problems you might encounter with the service pack.
TIP: Each time you install or reinstall NT services or protocols, you have to reinstall Service Pack 3. Do so before restarting the server.
