
In Chapter 24, "Managing Services and Devices," you learn how to work with NT services via the Service Manager. This appendix will take you one step further.
This appendix contains a list of the services that NT installs by default for your reference. Each heading is the name of the service, and the text under it is the description. You'll also find a list of any other services on which it depends.
The Alerter service must be running if you want to broadcast messages when something goes wrong on the server. The Alerter service also requires the Messenger service to be running.

The ClipBook Server enables users across the network to share information stored in the ClipBook Viewer.
Depends On: Network DDE
The Computer Browser service is responsible for maintaining the browse list, as described in Chapter 17, "Configuring the Network Browser." This service must be running for the computer to participate on the network.
Depends On: Workstation, Server
The DHCP Client service supports DHCP IP management on the client computer. It's responsible for requesting an IP address from the DHCP server. Note that on servers acting as DHCP servers, this service is not enabled; the server is using a static IP address. See Chapter 13, "Implementing DHCP IP Management," for more information.
The Directory Replicator service handles directory replication. It is running on both the export and import computers that participate in the replication process, using the same user account on both computers.

The EventLog service handles the System, Security, and Application event logs. To use these logs, use the Event Viewer.
This service is an integral part of Internet Information Service, which enables you to serve FTP content locally or to the Internet. Start, stop, and configure this service via the Internet Service Manager.
This service is an integral part of Internet Information Service, which enables you to serve Gopher content locally or to the Internet. Start, stop, and configure this service via the Internet Service Manager.
The License Logging Service manages "per seat" or "per server" licensing on a server. It ensures that the server is in compliance with your license agreement. The License Logging Service also manages the license for other BackOffice products.
The Messenger service is required to send or receive administrative alerts. See "Alerter," earlier in this appendix.

The Microsoft DHCP Server supports dynamic IP management. It manages the allocation and assignment of IP addresses on the network. See Chapter 13, "Implementing DHCP IP Management," for more information about this service.
The Net Logon service maintains the security features such as logons and domain security. It also provides the mechanism by which security files are synchronized between servers within a domain.

The Network DDE service manages trusted shares on the network. By default, NT creates the Chat$, CLPBK$, and Hearts$ shares. You use the DDE Share manager (DDESHARE.EXE) to manage trusted shares. See the following section, "Network DDE DSDM."

This service maintains a list of shared conversations. Its most notable responsibility is handling security between the local and remote users of a share. You use the DDE Share Manager (DDESHARE.EXE) to manage trusted shares. See the preceding section, "Network DDE."
This service provides Windows NT security for RPC applications that use transports other than LAN Manager named pipes.
This service manages Plug and Play devices on the server. Windows NT Server 4.0 does not support Plug and Play, but it can detect some Plug and Play devices.
The Remote Access Autodial Manager automatically establishes a Dial-Up Networking connection when requested by an application. See Chapter 15, "Using Remote Access Service (RAS)," for more information.
This service manages the Dial-Up Networking connections you establish via the Dial-Up Networking Phonebook. See Chapter 15, "Using Remote Access Service (RAS)," for more information.
The Remote Access Server service handles incoming Dial-Up Networking connections. See Chapter 15, "Using Remote Access Service (RAS)," for more information.
This service is the name-service provider to which an RPC server exports information about itself.
The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service is responsible for supporting RPC applications on the server.
The Schedule service launches jobs that you schedule by using the AT command-line scheduler. This service must be running to launch scheduled jobs.
The Server service manages file and print services for users connected to the local computer. It also manages named pipe sharing and RPC support functions. When the Server service fails, the computer cannot be accessed from the network.
The Spooler service implements the print spooler. It handles spooling print jobs to disk and printing in the background. See Chapter 23, "Sharing Files and Printers," for more information.
The UPS service manages the server's UPS. The UPS must be physically connected to the server, and you must configure it via Control Panel.
The Windows Internet Name Service is responsible for name resolution on the network. If the server is not acting as a WINS server, this service will not start.
The Workstation service manages network connections, drive letter mappings, printer connections, and other local application interactions with the network. Explorer uses the Workstation service.
This service is an integral part of Internet Information Service, which enables you to serve HTML content locally or to the Internet. Start, stop, and configure this service via the Internet Service Manager.
